LED technology is a very energy efficient and low maintenance option for landscaping and other outdoor lighting needs. As a result, outdoor led lighting is becoming very competitive with the high intensity light sources that have traditionally been used for outdoor lighting.

There are several characteristics of led lighting that make this an attractive option. Led lights can direct light to the specific point where it is needed, and there is no warm up time. These are instant on lights.  These lights tend to be very compact and low profile and they have no breakable glass or dangerous filaments such as mercury. Led lights do not emit infrared or ultraviolet radiation, and they tend to have a longer life that is not affected by frequent switching. These lights are also an especially attractive choice in colder areas as the performance of led lighting actually improves in the cold.

Led lighting is a solid state method of lighting that does not use electrical filaments or gas. Instead, it uses a semiconductor, and this solid state provides resistance to shock and wear. As a result, the lifespan of led lighting is increased. Led lighting is still a fairly new technology. The first visible led light was invented in 1962 by a consulting scientist with General Electric. As a result of the technology’s young life, the initial investment may be a little higher. However, the increased lifespan and lower maintenance requirements make this a more cost effective option in the long run for all outdoor lighting needs.

Energy efficiency is another attractive characteristic of outdoor led lighting. In many communities, energy savings has become an extremely important issue. Led lighting offers some of the highest energy savings of any light source on the market today. In November 2008, the U.S. Department of Energy stated that there is no other lighting technology that offers the same energy saving potential as that of led lighting. In addition, it does this while actually improving lighting quality and reliability.

The size of outdoor led lighting can be a very important factor. In most outdoor lighting situations, the most desired effect is the receiving as much light as possible while having the equipment keeping a low profile for aesthetic purposes. Small led lights tend to be grouped together to produce the same effect of high intensity lighting, and the effects are enhanced by the ability to control the direction of the lighting.

The instant on characteristic of led lighting is also very useful in many outdoor lighting scenarios. Fluorescent lighting does not provide full brightness when initially turned on. Sometimes it may take three minutes or more for this type of lighting to reach full brightness. In contrast, led lighting comes on instantly, with no necessary warm up time needed. This can be a valued characteristic for both safety and convenience.

It is clear that outdoor led lighting is the perfect option for energy saving, as well as long term cost saving. Led lighting can offer all of these savings, while enhancing the effects of outdoor lighting through its higher quality and increased reliability.
